JAMAICA GLEANER ON BUNNY WAILER’S “BLACKHEART MAN” RE-MASTERED WITH EXTENDED DUB VERSIONS

Jamaica’s oldest newspaper reflects on Jamaica’s oldest icon.

Monday | June 15, 2009

Mel Cooke, Gleaner Writer

Thirty-three years after it was made, Bunny Wailer’s classic, Blackheart Man, album, has been given a crisp digital remastering and is being reissued, initially via download, Zojack Worldwide handling the arrangements.

Some of the songs are longer than when they were first released in 1976 as Bunny Wailer, who told The Gleaner he is responsible for the project, has added dub tracks to some of the original songs (“So you can get a little bit for your money, a little bit more for your listening,” Bunny Wailer says). Apart from those additions, the songs have been kept strictly original, with the sound being improved.

The track listing has been kept the same, so the 10-track Blackheart Man starts out with the title track and continues with Fighting Against Conviction, The Oppressed Song, Fig Tree, Dream Land, Rastaman, Reincarnated Souls, Amagideon (Armageddon), Bide Up and This Train.

Wailer says, “We start out with the most current medium, which is downloading, that is where everything revolutionise in the whole business, so there is the first approach to get the Blackheart Man and the whole Bunny Wailer catalogue back in the streets.”  read more…

SOJA – SYR MAHBER (DMV MUSIC)

Decadence
A truly international roots reggae effort, Syr Mahber – Amharic for “roots association” is crafted with the same musical and conscious heights SOJA has earned over the past years while touring and playing to loving fans internationally. Each artist was hand picked by SOJA to form a musical family tree with roots in “Be Aware” and “Faith Works.” Syr Mahber stands out with featured songs from established reggae stars from the Caribbean such as Tony Rebel, Luciano, Queen Ifrica and President Brown from Jamaica and Ras Attitude and Batch from St. Croix as well as artists from Ethiopia, Puerto Rico and United States. The cooperative effort produces excellent results over 16 solid tracks of conscious roots reggae music with quality instrumentation and arrangements.

SOJA opens the album with two tracks demonstrating why the group is known for their attention to songwriting and musicianship. SOJA’s Bobby Lee pulls no punches attacking every day sufferation on “Be Aware” and then returns with the inspirational “Faith Works”. What follows is a riddim driven experience made all the more unique with SOJA’s tight production. Luciano maintains the inspirational vibe with “Hold On”, President Brown gets serious about looking to Selassie “for the light and truth” on “Trod Again” while SOJA rips a funky bass driven groove and Queen Ifrica gives an outstanding effort on “I Rise” alongside SOJA’s rock and roll overdubs. Syr Mahber also features St. Croix’s Ras Attitude who represents for the new generation of conscious deejays hailing from V.I. Ras Attitude’s hot lyrical flow on “Face Off” is tempered only by “Rest Of My Life”, a carefully crafted song of solidarity sung by SOJA’s own Jacob Hemphill. Sister Carol interrogates the “Decadence” of modern times while Batch, also from St. Croix, continues the foundation roots style with “Neck Tie” and Tony Rebel brims with experience and confidence on “I Know”. Fear Nuttin Band’s punk influenced edge to “Beware” adds to a range of genres included on the album. Syr Mahber closes with a selection of crucial roots music from Jah Dan (“No Way”), Junior Kelly (“Damn”), and Don Caramelo whose Puerto Rican roots mix well with SOJA on “What Do You See”. Combining authentic riddim production with live instrumentation and a selection of extraordinary artists from around globe, Syr Mahber is a must listen for fans of roots reggae and world music as well as music fans internationally!
