The
practice of pairing singers with deejays for a performance is
older than reggae itself.
In 1950s and 60s Jamaica, the deejay talked on the
microphone to introduce songs and impress the crowd while the
selector selected which instrumental rhythms the deejay would
talk over. Subsequently,
reggae artists of the 1970s and 80s more often than not
performed with sound systems and selectors rather than a full
band and because most of these performances took place in
large halls to accommodate the crowds, the dancehall spirit
has always been closely linked to singers and sound systems.
