TOUSSAINT’S NEW ALBUM, BLACK GOLD, IS A TRULY AMAZING JOURNEY THROUGH CARIBBEAN ROOTS AND AMERICAN SOUL

I Grade Records is pleased to introduce, Black Gold, the debut solo album by Toussaint. Most well known as the former lead singer of the Stax Records and Blue Note recording group Soulive, Toussaint is poised to bring forth his unforgettable blend of soul and roots to the world. Black Gold embodies a unique combination of the American soul of Toussaint’s upbringing and the African-Caribbean roots he has gravitated towards. His compelling storytelling and seamless vocal range (as heard on the standout tracks “Roots In A Modern Time”, “Unforgettable”, “Black Gold”) are a perfect match for the cutting-edge, soul-tinged roots grooves assembled by Virgin Islands-based I Grade Records (Midnite, Dezarie, Pressure, Niyorah). Black Gold is available  digitally on August 10 through Zojak Worldwide, and distributed physically through VIROOTS.COM, Ernie B’s Reggae and VP Records starting August 24.

About Toussaint:

Toussaint has spent his entire life at the musical crossroads, always breaking new ground along the way. The son of a Baptist preacher and gospel singer, Toussaint nurtured his craft in the church at a young age before finding his own voice in the compelling lyrics and artistic independence of the hip-hop group Red Pill, the funk reggae oufit The China Band, the rock and soul of the Trama Unit, more recently Buru Style and most notably during the two years he spent as lead singer with legendary Stax Records and Blue Note recording group, Soulive.

About Zion High Kings Production team:

In 2003, three noted producers, Laurent (Tippy I) Alfred of I Grade Records, Moon (aka Digital Ancient) of Lustre Kings and Jah David of Zion High Productions, first came together to collaborate. Dean Pond joined the team and the collective struck gold with Duane Stephenson’s “Hard Times” and “Flying High” by Jahdan Blakkamoore. Once again, Zion I Kings’ work on Toussaint’s “Roots In A Modern Time” sets a new standard for modern day roots music.

BASS INA YU FACE RECORDS

MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

As the name indicates, Bass Inna Yu Face Records incorporates a very bass mentality in its production. Started by Othniel ‘Taddy P’ Campbell and based (ahem) in Montego Bay, the label’s fusion of funk, soul and reggae have been highlighted as “defining a new sound for reggae” (Tomas Palermo/ForwardEver).

TADDY P

From a homemade guitar constructed by his father – the body fashioned from wood and fishing line for strings – Jamaica’s bass guitar virtuoso and producer Taddy P never let the ‘big one’ get away.

Endless practice sessions as a youth in Montego Bay, Jamaica on the homemade guitar earned Taddy a proper one, and eventually, classical studies at the Royal School of Music in London, England, which led to a regular gig as the personal bass player for 2-time Grammy nominee, Maxi Priest, productions with Jamaica’s top vocalists and launching the Bass Ina You Face record label.

Despite the unconventional route, Taddy P’s formula has always been the same: endless hours of practice and sheer hard work at fine tuning Taddy’s hard-driving yet well-rounded, infectious bass style.

It is this infectious style that Taddy P brings to his own productions with Tanya Stephens (“Heart of Stone”), Bunny Rugs of Third World (“Monday Night Blues”) and Macky Conscious (“Leave the Crumbs Alone”).

Indeed, Taddy P’s diverse life experiences music manifest themselves in the music, which combine roots reggae riddims and a compelling message with bluesy melodies, rock overdubs and a consistent soulful vibe.
